SFPA update online guidance relating to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU) requirements and obligations by industry

SFPA update online guidance relating to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU) requirements and obligations by industry

The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) has advised that it has updated its online guidance in relation to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU). Three years on from Brexit, requirements for importing from and exporting to the United Kingdom (UK) are now aligned with directions for all third countries. The SFPA website reflects this standardisation of information. The updates can be accessed at IUU Fishing | Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (sfpa.ie)

The SFPA’s aim is to provide clear, understandable, and accessible information for key stakeholders, and effectively a ‘one-stop-shop’ for all IUU-related Trade Compliance information. As part of the update to the IUU section of the website, there are several new features added. For example:

  • a new Re-Import section has been added. The new section will provide key information and application forms to re-importers, ensuring the process is more efficient for industry.
  • the legislation section has been revised and formatted chronologically with explanatory notes. This now includes all relevant legislation including the recent SI 264/2023 on port designation.
  • Industry guidance documents have also been updated to provide guidance for Third Country Imports/Exports.

Fish is highly traded in international markets. IUU fishing is a significant threat to the future sustainability and viability of legitimate fishing interests and activities. It results in an uneven playing field and jeopardises the development of sustainable fisheries on which many coastal communities globally rely for their livelihoods, including those in Ireland. As regulators, the SFPA are committed to utilising all the controls available to us to help detect and deter IUU fishing and fishery products within our jurisdiction.

It is important for all industry members to familiarise themselves with the updates to ensure compliance.  Compliance with the regulations is essential for the sustainable management of our marine resources. If you have any questions or require further clarification on these updates, please do not hesitate to reach out to the SFPA at IUU Contacts | Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (sfpa.ie)We are committed to providing assistance and guidance to support compliance with the relevant legislation.
