Margin of Tolerance (MoT)

The margin of tolerance is the difference between the estimated quantity of species recorded by the master in the fishing logbook (ELW) and the actual weight of the catch once weighed and converted to live-weight (LWE).

The Council Regulation (EC) No 1224/2009 establishing a Union control system for ensuring compliance with the rules of the common fisheries policy, otherwise known as the Control Regulation, has been revised by Regulation (EU) 2023/2842.  One revision concerns the permitted margin of tolerance.

The Fisheries Information Notice (FIN) entitled: New Rules for the Margin of Tolerance outlines the new margin of tolerance rules which will came into effect on the 10th July 2024 under the new Control Regulation.
